Despite the peaceful mood of the town, there is a growing range of activities and accommodation options to rival that in Cabo San Lucas. These include fishing and golfing.
San Jose del Cabo is the cultural capital of the region, with a rich historical background. The Pericu settled the area at least ten thousand years ago, witnessing the epic battles between pirates and Spanish galleons here. Founded as a Jesuit mission in 1730, San Jose del Cabo remained a backwater until visitors discovered its fertile waters and superb beaches. Whereas Cabo San Lucas was rebuilt to meet the needs of tourists, San Jose del Cabo preserves an authentic and captivating Mexican atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy art exhibitions, concerts, and traditional and modern Mexican music, often taking place in quaint streets and town squares. Boats are available to rent so that avid anglers can fish in waters rich with marlin, sailfish, tuna, and dorado. Fishing opportunities are expanding with the development of a new marina. To the north-east is Cabo Pulmo, famed for its excellent diving and dubbed by Jacques Cousteau “the aquarium of the world”. San Jose del Cabo is in close proximity to the professional golf courses in the Los Cabos Corridor, and the town boasts Jack Nicklaus designed courses just to the west. In addition, there is a plethora of beach activities, such as surfing, jet-skiing, and parasailing.
These advantages also attract the rich and famous. Celebrities seen around town in recent years include Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsdale, and Toby Maguire. John Travolta held his 50th birthday at the One & Only Palmilla. With its signature Jack Niklaus golf courses, the luxurious resort has also played host to John Wayne, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Further south is Las Ventanas al Paraiso, at which Bono, Jessica Simpson, and Harrison Ford have been guests.
