SAN JOSE DEL CABO FISHING

San Jose del Cabo is the ideal vacation destination for the avid angler. The idyllic mood of the town and abundance of the surrounding waters attract fishermen from across the globe. With its colonial architecture dating back centuries, the town is a picturesque backdrop for a relaxing fishing trip.

The waters of Los Cabos are well-known for their plentiful populations of marine life. San Jose del Cabo activities like fishing or diving are not an exception. Perched at the southernmost point of the Baja California Peninsula, San Jose overlooks the Sea of Cortez, which Jacques Cousteau once crowned "the richest sea in the world". Indeed, the profusion of big-game fish drew American author Erest Hemingway to the area. The fertile waters boast high populations of billfish, particularly marlin and sailfish. In fact, more marlin are caught off the coast of Los Cabos than anywhere else in the world. This includes blue, black, and striped marlin. A number of annual billfish tournaments have been established in Cabo San Lucas at the other end of the Los Cabos Corridor. The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament and Bisbee’s Black and Blue take place in October, with the latter paying out millions of dollars in prizes. Not all of the competitions are for billfish, however. The Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot, held in November, features the largest number of fishing boats chartered in Mexico.

There are several advantages to basing a fishing trip in San Jose del Cabo. The town is laid-back, with fewer crowds and a rich historical heritage. The surrounding waters offer a unique combination of close reef and offshore fishing. Most fishing boats concentrate on the Gordo Banks a few miles offshore. Consisting of the Inner and the Outer Gordo Banks, these seamounts are havens for several species, including snappers, amberjacks, and groupers. However, it is also possible to head west from San Jose and fish the waters of the Pacific, or to make sail north-east around the cape. The best chances of catching striped marlin occur from December through June, while blue and black marlin, as well as sailfish and dorado, are more plentiful from June through November. Yellowfin tuna favour the months of April through November.

A new marina is in development in San Jose del Cabo to rival that in Cabo San Lucas. Boats, ranging from traditional pangas (beach-launched skiffs powered by outboard motors) to luxury sailing - and motor-yachts, can be chartered through hotels and resorts. Equipment is provided, as is guidance for those with less experience, and bait can be bought on board. Fish caught and not returned to the sea will be filleted and frozen to bring back, cook, and enjoy.
